How to Type Zalgo Text on iPhone, Android or PC

Published November 4, 2026

You can’t type zalgo text straight from a keyboard: no phone or computer keyboard has keys for the combining marks it’s made of. On every device, the practical way is to type your words into a zalgo text generator, copy the result and paste it where you want it. On Windows and Mac you can also insert single marks by their code, which works for an accent or two but is far too slow for real zalgo.

Time: under a minute. Difficulty: easy. Built-in methods checked against Apple’s and Microsoft’s documentation on 4 November 2026.

What you need

Why there’s no zalgo key

Each zalgo letter is an ordinary letter followed by a stack of Unicode combining marks: small symbols that draw above, through or below the letter before them instead of taking up their own space. The é in “café” can be built the same way, from e plus one combining accent. Zalgo just stacks many: our Subtle Static preset puts 2 to 4 marks on each letter, and the generator’s default setting can put up to 22 on one letter. Typing 22 characters you can’t see for every letter isn’t realistic, which is why zalgo text is generated, not typed.

On iPhone

  1. Open the generator in Safari or any other browser.
  2. Type your text in the box. Drag the Above, Through and Below sliders down if it’s going into a chat.
  3. Tap Copy text.
  4. Open your app, touch and hold in the text field, then tap Paste.

To reuse the same phrase: the iPhone keyboard has no keys for combining marks, but it can store a phrase behind a shortcut. Apple’s steps: open Settings, tap General, then Keyboard, then Text Replacement, tap the plus button, put your text in the Phrase field and a short code in the Shortcut field. Paste your zalgo text into Phrase. Apple doesn’t say whether every combining mark survives the expansion, so try it once in the app you’ll use before you rely on it.

On Android

  1. Open the generator in Chrome or any other browser.
  2. Type your text and set the sliders.
  3. Tap Copy text.
  4. In your app, touch and hold the text field and tap Paste.

To reuse the same phrase: keep your zalgo text in a notes app and copy it from there when you need it.

On Windows

  1. Open the generator in your browser, type your text and click Copy text.
  2. Click into your app and press Ctrl+V.

The built-in way, for single marks: Microsoft Word turns a hex code into a character when you press Alt+X. Microsoft says this also works in Outlook, OneNote and WordPad, but not in Notepad.

  1. Type a letter, for example a.
  2. Type the code of a combining mark, for example 0301 (combining acute accent).
  3. Select just 0301 and press Alt+X. You get á, built from a plus the mark.

If Word converts the wrong characters, Microsoft’s advice is to select the code before pressing Alt+X. That matters here because the letters a to f are hex digits too, so a0301 could be taken as one long code. Other marks to try: 0316 (grave accent below) and 0334 (tilde overlay, which draws through the letter). The main combining marks are in the range U+0300 to U+036F.

Windows also includes Character Map (type “character” in the taskbar search): select a character, click Select, then Copy, and paste it into your document. Both methods add one mark per step, so they suit an accent, not a paragraph of zalgo.

On Mac

  1. Open the generator in Safari or any other browser, type your text and click Copy text.
  2. Click into your app and press Command+V.

The built-in way, for single marks: press Fn+E (or Globe+E), or choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols, to open the Character Viewer. Apple says you can search it by a symbol’s name or code, then click a character to add it to your text. Try searching for “combining” or a code like 0301. Like the Windows tools, it’s one mark per click.

Will it survive where you paste it?

Generating zalgo text is the easy part. Whether the marks arrive depends on the app. We sent the same text through four apps’ web versions on 3 November 2026 (full results):

App What happened
Discord Kept only the first 5 marks on each letter, and fewer in long messages. Your message box shows everything until you press Enter.
Telegram Turned three specific marks (U+030A, U+0333 and U+033F) into plain spaces and kept the rest.
WhatsApp Kept everything, including 20 marks on one letter.
Slack Kept everything. It reorders marks into Unicode’s standard order, which looks the same.

So for Discord, use the Subtle Static preset or keep the sliders low; it never puts more than 4 marks on a letter. Our generator stopped using Telegram’s three problem marks on 4 November 2026. Mobile apps can behave differently from their web versions, so check once on your phone.

Common mistakes

Troubleshooting

Boxes or blank squares (“tofu”). The device’s font has no drawing for one of the marks. Lower the Through slider first, since through marks are the most likely to show as boxes, or read why this happens.

The text got cut short. Either the app trims marks (Discord keeps 5 per letter) or the field has a character limit that counts every mark. The character limits page lists the limits platforms publish.

Gaps or spaces appeared inside words. That’s Telegram’s three marks turning into spaces. Generate the text again here, since the current generator no longer uses them. If the text came from somewhere else, it may still contain them.

FAQ

How many marks can one letter hold?

Unicode itself doesn’t set a limit. The apps do: Discord keeps 5 per letter, while WhatsApp delivered 20 on one letter in our test.

Why does my zalgo text look different on someone else’s phone?

The marks are drawn by each device’s own text engine and fonts, so spacing and height vary between iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. The characters are the same; only the drawing differs.

How do I turn zalgo text back into normal text?

Delete the combining marks and the original letters come back unchanged. See how to remove zalgo text for the steps and one catch with accented letters.
